Boulder, Colorado police officer, John Smyly resigned this past Wednesday, before his scheduled administrative hearing.

The hearing was about a confrontation that the police officer had with an African-American Naropa University student, Zayd Atkinson in March.

An internal investigation revealed that the officer Smyly in his treatment of Atkinson, had violated conduct, police authority and public trust.

In the resignation agreement he will reportedly stay on with the department until 2020, and will receive $69,000.

According to the AtlantaBlackStar:

Atkinson’s lawyer, Siddhartha Rathod, was less-than-pleased with the agreement and said the city was using taxpayer dollars to reward Smyly for his misconduct.

Rathod later said: “Boulder is paying this officer nearly $80,000 in taxpayer money, giving him a year’s paid vacation for what he did”.
