Apparently, you can’t camp while Black in Mississippi, well, I guess you can, but you take the chance of getting shot by an elderly hillbilly-looking version of Barbara Bush or the Queen of England.
That almost happened to a Black couple who decided to go camping in rural Mississippi, in a town called, Starkville, which is around Oktibbeha County Lake. The area they heard is a good destination for people who like to go fishing or swimming.
A few minutes after the couple(Jessica and Franklin Richardson) arrived, they claim they were confronted by an elderly White woman, who started pointing a very large revolver at them.
According to The Root Dot Com:
“Not five mins later a truck pulls up and a white lady screams at us, she then jumps out of her truck with a Gun. And proceeded to point it at the 3 of us, simply because we didn’t make reservations,” Jessica wrote on the Facebook video’s caption.
The camp grounds were reportedly privately owned by a company called Kampgrounds of America, and they allegedly needed a reservation before entering the area, that lack of information nearly cost them their lives.

This reminded me of a conversation I had with a White woman I met in 2013. She was desperately trying to find something that I have in common with her. There’s a reason I say “what I have in common” with her rather than what she has in common with me. Anyway, most of her questions about things I did as a child did not cause me to pause. She was born and raised in LA where it’s summer all year. I was born and raised in Chicago with changes of season.
It was her question of whether my family took me camping as a child that gave me pause. She is a year older than myself, so should have understood that in the 50’s and 60’s, no person of color (I include those of Puerto Rican descent who I knew), were going to travel to another state to sleep outside with the possibility that bigoted White folks would be out hunting. I told her that as an adult, a camping trip for me would be renting a room at the Holiday Inn. 🙂
I grew up in Detroit, and I haven’t been camping either Haha. Even in a northern state like Michigan, which is right next to Canada, you still have southern-style racist groups like the Michigan militia or the klan. I read about MLK’s issues dealing with the racism in Chicago, the racism there would make a southern redneck proud. If you ever chance you should read a book called “Sundown Towns”,it talks about how the north allowed segregation, even without Jim Crow laws, they wouldn’t allow many if any Blacks in their areas. The keep most Blacks out of their cities through domestic terrorism or just not allowing them to move in.
Funny you mention Michigan because that is where the person told me they went to camp. LOL! I’m well aware of the issues in Chicago, especially back in the 50’s and 60’s. Reading the Defender newspaper and Jet magazine was a regular thing in our household. Chicago had its sections where no people of color were allowed without being beaten or harassed. Cicero, which is a suburb of Chicago, is the city that MLK marched in. Two Black men had gone there looking for jobs, and were almost beaten to death. Don’t get me started about the ugly and evil things that bigoted Whites did to houses when Blacks moved in.
