I remember hearing about Leopold II a few years ago and I was sickened especially with all the destruction done under his regime. His statue and buildings are still up in Belgium to this day. Know about those chocolate hands sold in that country? They got the idea from Leopold’s soldiers chopping off Congolese hands and are still sold in various shops in Belgium (cannibalistic implications much?). It’s just sick with how he got away with everything. This genocide made me so angry and I got angrier when I found out that Congolese was one of my biggest African ethnic results in my DNA test. That revelation made me wonder if my ancestors suffered under Leopold’s brutal reign.
